Rose - Cassis - Patchouli

Sometimes a fragrance earns its place simply because it performs beautifully.

Not every fragrance needs a long backstory.

When I first tested this blend, what stood out wasn't the rose or the plum. It was how well it filled the room.

Anyone who burns candles regularly will know that two fragrances can smell wonderful in the jar, yet behave very differently once they're lit. Some remain delicate and understated, while others gradually transform the atmosphere around them.

This one immediately fell into the second category.

It had the sort of fragrance throw that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. From that point on, I knew it deserved a place in the Small Batch collection.

Fragrance Notes

Top
Bergamot, Orange, Plum, Cassis

Heart
Rose, Black Cherry, Prune

Base
Patchouli, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Musk, Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg

What does it smell like?

The first impression is rich fruit rather than flowers.

Plum and cassis arrive first, lifted by bergamot and orange to give the fragrance a freshness that keeps everything feeling bright. It has depth from the beginning, but never feels heavy.

As 004 settles, the rose gradually becomes more noticeable. It isn't the sort of rose that dominates the room or reminds you of traditional floral perfumes. Instead, it sits comfortably amongst the darker fruit notes, bringing elegance rather than sweetness.

The base is where everything begins to knit together. Patchouli, musk and tonka bean add warmth, while gentle touches of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg give the fragrance a richness that becomes more noticeable the longer the candle burns.

What I enjoy most about 004 is how layered it feels. Every time you think you've worked it out, another note quietly comes forward. It's the sort of fragrance that rewards a long evening rather than a quick first impression.

Why I chose 004

When I'm testing fragrances, there are two questions I always come back to.

Would I enjoy burning this in my own home?

And does it perform as well as it smells?

For 004, the answer to both was an immediate yes.

Floral fragrances don't always have the strongest fragrance throw, so when I find one that fills a room this well, it immediately gets my attention. Combined with the richness of the plum and the warmth running through the base notes, it became one of those candles I found myself returning to again and again during testing.

There wasn't a grand plan for 004.

It simply proved, burn after burn, that it belonged in the collection.

About ambustum Small Batch

Small Batch gives me the freedom to work with fragrances that sit outside the permanent collection.

Sometimes that's because I've always wanted to explore a particular fragrance family. Sometimes it's because a test candle keeps drawing me back until I realise it deserves a place.

Every numbered release is hand poured in small batches and produced in limited quantities. Some will return in future collections, while others will only ever exist once.

That's part of the enjoyment. Every year brings a new collection, and every number has its own story.

Candle Care

For the best performance, trim the wick to 5 millimetres after every use.

The wick should always look short and upright for a clean burn. Allow the wax to fully melt to the edge of the glass before extinguishing to prevent tunnelling.

*Please note, as every candle is hand-poured there may be slight variations in the finished product.
