Mango, Lime & Lemongrass
Some fragrances are chosen with your head. This one was chosen with my heart.
When I'm testing new fragrances, I'm usually looking for balance, complexity and how well they'll fill a room. Most of the time it's a fairly analytical process.
This fragrance was different.
Every time I lit it, I found myself smiling.
Perhaps that's because mango has always been my favourite fruit, or perhaps it's simply because there's something incredibly uplifting about this blend. Whatever the reason, I kept coming back to it until it became obvious that it belonged in this year's Small Batch collection.
Not because it was trying to be the boldest fragrance in the range, but because every collection needs something that brings a little lightness alongside the richer, moodier scents.

What does it smell like?
The first impression is wonderfully fresh.
Lemongrass and lemon immediately brighten the room, creating a clean citrus opening that's vibrant without ever becoming sharp. It feels refreshing rather than zesty, giving the fragrance an energy that's noticeable from the moment it's lit.
As 003 develops, the fruit begins to take centre stage. Mango is the most recognisable note, but it never dominates. Instead, it's supported by lime, peach and melon, creating a fragrance that's juicy and ripe without becoming overly sweet. The tropical notes feel natural and balanced rather than artificial or sugary, which is exactly what drew me to it in the first place.
As the candle continues to burn, pineapple and grapefruit quietly round everything together, adding another layer of freshness and helping the brighter notes linger throughout the room.
Although it's undoubtedly the freshest candle in this year's collection, I don't really think of 003 as a summer fragrance. It's the sort of candle I reach for whenever I want a room to feel brighter, whether that's on a grey January afternoon or with the doors open on a warm evening in June.
Why I chose 003
This was probably the easiest decision I made when putting the collection together.
Mango has always been my favourite fruit, so I was naturally drawn to the fragrance from the start. What surprised me was how well everything else worked around it. The citrus keeps the fragrance feeling fresh, while the softer fruit notes stop it becoming too sharp or one dimensional.
The permanent ambustum collection naturally leans towards richer fragrances, and I didn't want Small Batch to feel like more of the same. 003 brings something completely different without ever feeling out of place.
Sometimes a fragrance earns its place because it's technically impressive.
Sometimes it earns its place because it fills a gap in the collection.
And sometimes, as with 003, it simply earns its place because every time I lit it, I enjoyed having it in the room.
About ambustum Small Batch
Small Batch gives me the freedom to work with fragrances that sit outside the permanent collection.
Sometimes that's because I've always wanted to explore a particular fragrance family. Sometimes it's because a test candle keeps drawing me back until I realise it deserves a place.
Every numbered release is hand poured in small batches and produced in limited quantities. Some will return in future collections, while others will only ever exist once.
That's part of the enjoyment. Every year brings a new collection, and every number has its own story.
Candle Care
Candle Care
For the best performance, trim the wick to 5 millimetres after every use.
The wick should always look short and upright for a clean burn. Allow the wax to fully melt to the edge of the glass before extinguishing to prevent tunnelling.
*Please note, as every candle is hand-poured there may be slight variations in the finished product.
