Pumpkin Spice
Every autumn, this fragrance returns. I wanted to understand why.
Every September, Pumpkin Spice reappears. Coffee shops bring it back, supermarket shelves fill with it and, before long, it feels as though autumn has officially begun.
For a long time, I didn't really understand the appeal.
Then I realised something I'd never really thought about before. Pumpkin Spice isn't actually the smell of pumpkin. It's the familiar blend of warming spices traditionally used in pumpkin pie that's become synonymous with autumn.
That made me curious.
Rather than dismissing it as another seasonal trend, I wanted to experience it properly and understand why people return to it year after year. The result is 001, my interpretation of one of the world's most recognisable autumn fragrance profiles.

What does it smell like?
If you've never experienced a Pumpkin Spice fragrance before, the first thing that will probably surprise you is that it isn't especially sweet.
The spices are what lead the fragrance from the very beginning. Nutmeg and ginger create an immediate warmth, while orange and lemon quietly brighten the opening so it never feels heavy. As the candle continues to burn, clove gradually becomes more noticeable, giving the fragrance extra depth without overpowering the room.
The base notes work differently. Caramel, vanilla and tonka bean aren't there to make 001 smell like dessert. Instead, they soften the sharper edges of the spices, leaving behind a fragrance that feels rounded, comforting and remarkably easy to live with.
It's a candle that naturally comes into its own as the evenings begin to cool. The windows are closed for the first time in months, jumpers come back out of the wardrobe and lighting a candle becomes part of your evening again. That's the moment 001 was made for.
Why I chose 001
Every fragrance in the Small Batch collection has a different story.
For 001, it was simple curiosity.
Pumpkin Spice has become such a recognisable part of autumn that I wanted to understand why it continues to capture people's attention year after year. Once I started testing different blends, it quickly became obvious that the best examples aren't about sweetness at all. They're about balance. The spices create warmth and character, while the softer notes stop the fragrance from ever becoming too bold or overpowering.
Whether you're already a fan of Pumpkin Spice or this is your first experience of the fragrance, I wanted 001 to feel true to everything people love about it while still feeling unmistakably ambustum.
About ambustum Small Batch
Small Batch is my opportunity to explore fragrances that sit outside the permanent ambustum collection.
Some are fragrances I've wanted to work with for years. Others simply surprise me during testing and refuse to be left behind. Each numbered release is chosen because I believe it deserves a place in the collection, not because it follows a trend or fills a gap.
Every candle is hand poured in small batches and produced in limited quantities. Some will return in future collections, while others will quietly become part of the archive.
That's what makes Small Batch special. Every year is a new collection, and every number tells its own story.
Candle Care
Candle Care
For the best performance, trim the wick to 5 millimetres after every use.
The wick should always look short and upright for a clean burn. Allow the wax to fully melt to the edge of the glass before extinguishing to prevent tunnelling.
*Please note, as every candle is hand-poured there may be slight variations in the finished product.
